Tournament Series 2023

The tournament series is divided into three different skillsets of Jiu Jitsu over four separate events.

Points are awarded to students depending on their finishing position in each event. The students with the most accumulated points in each of the belt categories at the end of the series, receive a trophy and have their names added to the Tournament Series plaque hanging in the dojo.

Little Champions only have one event, the Technique Tournament, and aren’t included in the series but are awarded medals at the end of their tournament.

  • White and yellow belts will participate in the first 4 events only. Orange belts and higher will participate in all 5 events.

❖ All divisions will take into account a students size, weight and rank. Please note that some students may be moved up a division due to size and experience, at the organizer’s discretion.

❖ Students are required to wear headgear, hand protectors, foot protectors and mouth guard.

❖ The tournament is double elimination so all students are guaranteed a minimum of two matches.

❖ When the Centre Referee determines that a point has been scored he/she will stop the match and ask the Corner Judges to determine if the point should count.  The Corner Judges, using red and white flags, will determine which student should receive the point.  The student to receive 3 of the judges votes (1 Centre Referee and 4 Corner Judges) will earn the point and the match will resume.  When one student scores three points the match ends.

  • Students are aiming to “tag” their opponent with a controlled and properly performed striking technique.  The aim to “tag” your opponent is essential as excessive contact or an intent to injure will result in warnings or disqualification.
  • Allowable Scoring Techniques
    • A technical kick or punch to the body that “tags” the opponent on the front or side of the body above the belt and below the shoulders.  Jabs or backfists to the body do NOT count for points
    • A technical strike that comes close to the helmet of the opponent above the shoulders but is NOT aimed towards the mask of the face.
  • Not permitted
    • Kicks or punches of excessive force or delivered with an intent to injure.
    • No strikes below the belt.
    • No strikes can target the mask of the face (i.e. jabs – backfist is a good alternative for a scoring strike to the helmet).
    • No intentional strikes to the opponents back.
    • No sweeps, trips or grabbing is permitted.
    • No running from the ring or turning your back to the opponent Arguing or disobeying the Centre Referee
  • When the Centre Referee determines that a point has been scored he/she will stop the match and ask the Corner Judges to determine if the point should count.  The Corner Judges, using red and white flags, will determine which student should receive the point.  The student to receive 3 of the judges votes (1 Centre Referee and 4 Corner Judges) will earn the point and the match will resume.  When one student scores three points the match ends.
  • In the event that a foul has occurred, the Centre Referee will stop the match and ask the corner judges to determine if a warning or disqualification should be awarded.  A small circle of the students colour by the Corner Judge’s flag indicates a warning, while a large circle indicates a disqualification.
    • First warning: No penalty
    • Second warning: 1 point deduction
    • Third warning: Disqualification
